ALDEBURGH CARNIVAL

There’s one date you can put in your diary every year...Aldeburgh Carnival. The big day is always the third Monday in August, though the fun and games start two days before on the Friday night.

Coast Lifeboats from Aldeburgh, Thorpe- ness and Dunwich. The coxswain of the Al- deburgh boat in those days was James Cable. Swimmers competed for the Aldous 20 Guinea Challenge Silver Cup, which is still being fought for 100 years later. On the day, visitors were entertained by the Aldeburgh Town Jubilee Band, sadly no longer in exist- ence.

Fireworks are a big feature of present day carnivals but in 1892 there were two dis- plays, Japanese fireworks in the afternoon and another in the evening.

In 1927, a carnival was added to the long established Olde Marine Regatta. The pro- cession was led by Father Neptune and his entourage – Queen Neptune, two Sharks, a Captain and six Sons of the Sea.

The Carnival is thought to be at least 170 years old. It has had various titles over the years but was known as Ye Old Marine Re- gatta as long ago as 1835. Aldeburgh is for- tunate in being one of the few towns that has managed to continue the carnival tradi- tion when so many others have been forced to give up.

The earliest traceable programme was for 29 August 1892 when 15 events were held – 12 sailing races, two swimming races and a greasy pole competition. One of the big at- tractions of the day was a race for the East

Present day Carnivals usually include a mili- tary band, possibly a fly-past or an aeronaut- ics display, lots of stands selling all sorts of grub and the lantern parade as the light be- gins to fade. Then it’s time for the spectacu- lar firework display.

The Carnival celebrates its 75th birthday in 2017 in its current format.

Bigger, better

and more colourful than ever, but still organ- ised by a dedicated team of volunteers! For a brilliant three days out at the seaside, come to Aldeburgh Carnival.
