the long queue outside one of Aldeburgh’s famous fish and chip shops (the other is owned by the same people and is outside the White Hart Inn at the end of the High Street). The Golden Galleon is upstairs on the one in the middle of the High Street, but on fine days most customers take their lunch or supper on to the beach. (But please don’t feed the seagulls!).


Keep going up the right hand side of the High Street passing Bedfords the estate agents - tiny shop window selling beautiful big houses. Loiter for a coffee at Munchies, gaze in the window at the fine art displayed by the town’s art galleries, peruse the wines in Adnams.


When you get to the end of the High Street, pop into the White Hart for a livener and then you can head back on the other side of the street. Past the chain store outlets and the wine shop and the excellent electrical shop (which sells loads of non-electric stuff too).


One of the jewels on the High Street is the Aldeburgh Market, with its distinctive red canopy and pavement tables. It boasts an excellent fish counter and fresh fruit and veg and serves superb food in its fish restaurant. And another good foody place is Lawson’s Delicatessen - lots of fine dining to be had here.


And why not treat your loved one to a lit- tle something from Riley and Riley, jewellers with some interesting items.
