1. Vitamin A: Since vitamin A (NOT beta carotene, which a hypothyroid cannot effi ciently convert to vitamin A) is critical to proper thyroid function, defi ciency is associated with thyroid dysfunction.
In
one 2012 study of obese premenopausal women, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, the re- searchers concluded that, since vitamin A treatment signifi cantly reduced TSH blood levels, vitamin A supplementation might reduce the risk of SCH.
2. Anti-Microbials/Virals: According
to David Brady, ND, DC, CCN, a Fairfi eld, Connecticut practitioner, “stealth viruses” can cause Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoim- mune infl ammation of the thyroid), the most common cause of SCH. He recommends treating such viruses with: (1) antimicrobi- als (berberine, caprylic acid, grapefruit seed extract, oil of oregano, and/or black walnut); (2) prebiotics (acacia fi ber, inulin, and/or FOS); and (3) probiotics (anti-infl am- matory; rotated diverse strains of viable live organisms).
3. Balanced B Complex Vitamins: The B vitamins that are most critical to thyroid function are: (1) Ribofl avin/B2 (almonds, brewer’s yeast); (2) Niacin/B3; and (3) Pyro- doxine/B6 (bananas, brewer’s yeast) – defi - ciency prevents the thyroid’s effi cient use of iodine. Also, hypothyroidism can prevent proper metabolism and use of ingested cobalamin/B12 (grass fed organic beef, organic eggs, haddock, sole) (best absorbed in the methyl and dibencozide supplement forms). B12 defi ciency can cause perni- cious anemia, mental illness, neurological disorders, and death. B vitamins should be taken in balance before higher doses of single Bs are added to a supplements regi- men.
4. Iodine [cod, haddock, halibut, sea bass (2x/week), seafood, kelp/seaweed, cod liver oil, iodized salt]: The body re- quires iodine to make TH. The daily upper intake level (UL) of iodine for adults is 1100 mcg, but higher amounts are usually well- tolerated. Intake exceeding 800 mcg/day can lead to SCH, and regular excessive in- take of iodine can exacerbate Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and reduce thyroxine production and thyroid function.
While supplemental iodine needs can
vary widely among individuals, Stephen Langer, MD, recommends these daily amounts: (1) Babies 0-6 Months – 35 mcg; (2) Babies 6 months- 12 months – 45 mcg; (3) Children 1-6 years – 60 mcg; (4) Chil- dren 7-10 years – 80 mcg; (5) People Aged
