special place as we who live and/or work along it know. This is a working coast with the summer people fi tting in as best they can and at times not very well. Is it the tranquili- ty, the scenery or the people that creates this special environment? For many of us it is all the above, and if any these traits are lost what is it that will be the drawing factor. Some of the people from away see this

and do not try to change it to make it like the hell-hole they left. Others come and see dollar signs and buy up as much property as they can hoping to make a lot of money from their investment. They fail to see that once the special traits are gone, the prices go through the roof, what do you have left? I spent the past weekend in Boothbay,

a place Ann and I have been going for 38 years. It is interesting to see the changes in this small town. One person came in and cre- ated a golf resort that none of the locals say they can aff ord to be part of. Then this person purchased the Rocktide Inn, completely rehabbing the facility, but again pushing the prices up out of the reach of normal people. One wonders if the trend will continue and encompasses the whole town or just a few places. If just a few places become high-end, then it is not too bad. As I have stated before in regards to Portland and the prices they are getting for hotel rooms. I fl atly refused to pay $500 for a room in Portland and this means I do not go as much to the local restaurants, which is unfortunate as they have many great places to eat. Another major issue amongst Mainers

is the cruise ships. Back before the cruise ships began visiting Bar Harbor in the sum-

mer it was slightly overfl owing with tourists. Now, add 1,000 to 5,000 people to the streets of that small town in a day and what do you have? Yes, the shop owners like it as busi- ness booms, but you are losing those people who come here to escape. A friend who has lived in Bar Harbor most of his life just put his home on the market and moved to Hope and away from the choked sidewalks, shops and restaurants. In a Port Safety meeting the head of the cruise ship association in Maine failed to understand that the more cruise ships that visit the small coastal towns of Maine removes those special traits and the reasons why so many love the coast of Maine. She was actually surprised when someone said that most Maine towns did not want cruise ship visits. She thinks every Maine town wants this business, but really it is just the businesses that do, not the people who live in the area. I absolutely despise not completing a

project so I am going to make a more asser- tive eff ort to get the work done on the tug SATURN. I have been up on her, will be formulating a plan to gussy her up and get her running so she can be taken around as an exhibit and a place for people to stay on. The big hurdle will be fundraising. You all know that my GMC pick-up

truck has just a few miles, now over 391,000 miles. Since I did not want to get caught and be forced to take what was on the lot I decided to begin looking around and now I have a new GMC pick-up with payments. There goes e-Bay! However, I am still going to run the old one to see just how many more miles she will go.
