Chesapeake considers another site for juvenile facility

The City of Chesapeake, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, is continuing to review sites for the proposed Joint Juvenile Justice Center, to be located within the city. Numerous sites have been considered in order to determine the location which best fits all of the project parameters.

As part of that process, officials had identified the City-owned site at 3316 S. Military Highway as having strong potential for the project. An alternate site, which is believed to meet the needs of the project has been identified for consideration at 920 Minuteman Drive, which is the former location of the Chesapeake Alternative School. A number of reviews, permits, and other requirements must be addressed, but the site merits strong consideration.

In order to fully review this new site, it has been determined that this item will NOT be considered on the Chesapeake City Council's June 27 agenda, as had been previously announced. The determination of a new date for consideration of this topic will be made as quickly as possible, once the site reviews are completed.

The City remains committed to finding a site which provides safety and security for both the citizens of Chesapeake and for the juveniles who will be housed at the facility. A variety of other considerations including, but not limited to, size, location, utility availability, and accessibility are being reviewed as sites are evaluated. No specific timeline has been set for a final determination; however, the City will seek to provide information to, and gather input from, nearby residents at the earliest possible opportunity in the process.

Information about the project may be found at CityOfChesapeake.net/JJJC. Please note that specific information about the 3316 S. Military Highway site is currently on the website, with information about the 920 Minuteman Drive site to be added as it becomes available during the review process.
