The air comes alive with all manner of colourful beasties at Berck-sur-Mer’s annual International Kite Festival. There’s even a biennial championship, which sees entrants from all over the world compete in synchronised displays. France’s ‘Start’Air’ won last time following a spout of successive victories by the UK’s ‘Scratch Bunnies’, but who will take next year’s throne?

GARDENS Nuits des Mille Feux July 7-8, 2017 Château de Villandry in the Indre-et-Loire département is
known for its gardens. Filled with perfectly-manicured box hedging and popping with colour, these sublime grounds illuminate every year for the ‘Nights of a Thousand Lights’ – a candlelit spectacle that casts a soft glow upon Villandry’s gardens and paths over two evenings. After a mesmerising walk through les jardins, visitors are treated to a firework display, taking the light to the sky and reflecting in the pond, also known as ‘Miroir d’Eau’ or ‘The Water Mirror’.
