Jail for man who sent candidate text threats

LIBERAL Democrat general elec- tion candidate Emily Fermor was bombarded with sickening abuse by a Barming man after he re- ceived a leaflet through his door. Mark Sanders (49), sent four text messages to former Invicta Gram- mar School student Miss Fermor in the run-up to the general election on June 8. The abusewas sent to the Liberal Democrat team’s campaign mobile phone, not to Miss Fermor person- ally.

After Sanders was jailed for four months in June,Miss Fermor –who came third in the election locally with 16.4% of the vote – paid trib- ute to Kent Police for their “support and understanding”. Miss Fermor (23) said she found

the abuse particularly chilling, coming as it did just a year after the murder of LabourMPJo Cox in her constituency of Batley and Spen. She told Downs Mail: “Thank-

fully, my campaign team kept me sheltered from it at the time and Kent Police were absolutely exem- plary.

well as from the local team. “As a female candidate, you feel

a lot of solidarity with other female candidates from other parties. “It is hard to be a female candi-

date when you receive that kind of abuse.”

Sanders, who has a personality disorder and is a drug addict, sent the offending text messages to the campaign phone number – which was printed on the election litera- ture. The messageswere picked up by Lib Dem campaign assistant Jane Bird. Sanders was sent to prison for

Lib Dem candidate Emily Fermor “Their response could not have

been more supportive or under- standing of the situation, particu- larly in the light of what happened to Jo Cox only last year. “Theywere absolutely on it from

day one. The national party has had experience of this, so therewas a lot of support from that end as

120 days and ordered to pay £200 in costs after appearing at Maid- stone Magistrates’ Court on June 14. According to reports on Sanders, he has previous convic- tions for verbal abuse, racial abuse against a Muslim neighbour and possession of a pick axe handle with nails embedded in it. Miss Fermor, who is also a bor-

ough councillor in Coxheath and Hunton ward, was standing in her first general election. She lost to Conservative Helen Grant.
