News Council glossy

magis onway A NEW glossy magazine is to be published by Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) to promote its work and services. It replaces Borough Update, a quarterly insert published in Downs Mail for the past 12 years. The new 24-pager called Borough Insight – to be distributed by Royal Mail – is due through 66,000 letter boxes from the week commencing July 17 onwards. Mail Publications Ltd chairman

Claire Procter said despite losing the Borough Update contract, Downs Mail is “robust and sustain- able” in a difficult trading environ- ment. But she added: “We’ve ques-

tioned the council on the wisdom of this publication on grounds of heavy costs and reduced frequency of keeping taxpayers informed of significant and urgent informa- tion.” Mrs Procter said other local au- thorities, including Kent County Council, had tried launching simi- lar publications and failed. In his column this month, presi-

dent Dennis Fowle notes: “Too often local councils find running businesses is not their forte.”  Mail Marks, page 46

Emily’s short cut to boost cancer charity

WHEN bridesmaid-to-be Emily Smith started talking about shav- ing her head for charity, her brother’s heart ran a little cold. Fortunately for groom James, from Maidstone, Emily delayed her plans and a week after the wedding, for- mer East Malling student had her locks cut off for Cancer Research UK.

The stylist, from Downswood,

chose her colleague Ashley Long to do the deed. He took the clippers to her jaw-

length style at Directors hair salon where she works on the Ashford Road in Bearsted. Afterwards, Emily described her

new look as “a bit breezy, but fan- tastic”. The 26-year-old, who trained at

the salon, has been raising money for cancer research since her mum Diana had treatment for the disease. She said: “This affects so many people and their families. Previ- ously, I have taken part in the Race for Life at Mote Park and that sort of thing, but this time I wanted to do something visual and more mentally

challenging.Whatbetter challenge is there when you work as a hair- dresser? I know that hair is an ex- pression of our personality; it brings confidence. “When it comes to cancer, the first changewe see is someone’s hair loss. People don't have a choice in this and they lose a sense of identity. “I’m shavingmyhair to show it's a beautiful and strong thing to do and to show that no one should feel low about themself. “People shadowed by cancer are

the strongest and most beautiful people I know.” Emily’s new look has already at- tracted hundreds of pounds in spon- sorship from clients, family and friends and on her Just Giving page. So will she be keeping her new ultra-short style? “I do love it, but probably not. My family are really proud, but I think they prefer me with longer hair,” she said. Salon owner Vicky Luckhurst

said: “She is amazingly brave. I wouldn’twant to do it.”
