Supporting Young People Who Care
Gloucestershire Young Carers, a charity supporting children and young people who are caring for someone with mental or physical ill health or who is disabled or affected by substance misuse, is looking forward to a busy summer of fundraising.
The charity supports more than 1200 young people between the ages of 5 and 24 who are affected by their caring role and who face ‘adult-sized’ responsibilities in their family. Support from Gloucestershire Young Carers includes respite groups where the young people can go for a break from their caring role, to meet with other young carers and to access youth workers trained in young carers’ issues. The groups need funding to continue to support the young people, reduce isolation, increase resilience and encourage them to achieve in spite of their caring roles.
When a young person is referred to Gloucestershire Young Carers the team works with the family to assess the needs of the young person and then a plan of action is put together. The charity works with a raft of agencies to put support in place for the young person and their family member. They also work closely with schools and colleges throughout the county to identify and support young carers there.
Young carers like Jayne have found the charity to be fundamental in helping them overcome the challenges posed by illness or disability in their family and thrive at school and in their personal life.
She says: “A young carer doesn’t need just 24 hours in a day but 27 hours to fit in responsibilities not only for school and ourselves but also in looking after someone we care for.
“And for a young carer looking after someone who is older than you, a parent for example, the experience has a huge emotional impact.
“We are living the life of an adult with all the responsibilities that go with that.” This summer the charity will be the focus of a two day Family Fun event on August 19th and 20th at Cheltenham’s Newlands Park. The event is being organised by Midcounties Co-op and all funds raised will be split between Gloucestershire Young Carers and the Newlands Park Sports and Social club. At £2 entry, it promises to be a great two days.
In July the charity will also be looking for volunteers to help bake cakes, run tearooms and work on the Gloucester 10k event too. Anyone who may wish to get involved in any of the forthcoming events for Gloucestershire Young Carers should contact the Fundraising Team on: 01452 733060.
