Choir makes tour friends

THE Maidstone Singers are back from a European tour that saw them perform in Provence, Nice and Monaco. In Aix-en-Provence the Singers performed an “a cappella” concert with ladies choir Ensemble Vocal Agathe; and in Nice, with the En- semble Vocal La Sestina, while in Monaco they gave an impromptu performance, watched by security staff at Monaco Cathedral. Aspokesman for the Singers said: “Fortunately, they approved of the singing, and even joined in with ap- plause. Sincewe had not been given prior permission by the cathedral hi- erarchy, the outcomewas testament asmuchto Kathryn’s audacity as her musical directorship.” Whileaway, the Singers struck up

a new friendship following a per- formance with the Ensemble Vocal La Sestina, with both choirs enjoying a late night picnic overlooking the Promenade des Anglais. The choir’s one-day stop in Monte

Carlo also included a performance at the Anglican St Paul’s Church. The Maidstone Singers will take

part in the Brandenburg Choral Fes- tival of London Autumn Season on October 29. Details to follow at www.themaidstonesingers.org.uk.

Town centre car park opens at Post Office

A NEW car park on the site of the Post Office sorting office in the centre of Maidstone has opened to the public. During the week 150 spaces are

available to the public while a fur- ther 100 are reserved for permit holders and Kent County Council staffers. All 250 spaces at the car park next

to Maidstone East rail station will be available for public use at the weekends. KCC acquired the site last year

for about £5m. Demelza Hospice Care for Chil-

dren has signed a contract to take over a 2,500sqm building to act as its main retail warehouse and dis- tribution centre. The two councils have agreed a

brief for the master-planning of the whole Maidstone East project area, and consultants have expressed an interest in formulating detailed plans. The contract is expected to be awarded inAugust. A KCC statement said: “The for-

mer Royal Mail site is located next to Maidstone East railway station

and commuter car park, both of which are owned by Network Rail, and Cantium House, an office building owned by KCC. Together these sites form part of a strategic gateway into the town totalling about 10.5 acres.” The refurbished Sandling Road

car park, offering both indoor and outdoor spaces and CCTV cover- age, will be open from 5am to mid- night and managed by MBC

Parking Services. Charges, which can be paid by phone, credit card or cash, will be: £1.10 for one hour; £2.20 for three hours; £3.50 for four hours; and £6 for more than four hours. The former Royal Mail office building, totalling just under 10,000 sq. feet across three floors, is being marketed at the moment and will be ready for occupation by new tenants from this summer.
