Van driver in a hurry hit biker

A VAN driver who jumped a red light and caused serious injuries to a motorcyclist has been sent to prison. Martin Tucker (46), of Tonbridge Road, Maid- stone, was sentenced to two years and eight months on Friday, June 2, at Maidstone Crown Court. His sentence

follows an incident on Thursday, November 10, 2016, in which he was driving along Royal Engineers Road in Maidstone when he came up against traffic. Wanting to get home quicker, he

drove in the bus lane and went through a red a light. His Fiat Scudo then collided with a motor- cyclist. The 23-year-old motorcyclist had

just driven through a green light on the road when Tucker’s van ap- peared in front of him. The victim sustained life-threat-

ening injuries and was taken to a London hospital, where he was

treated for multiple fractures, a punctured lung and internal in- juries, which included damaged kidneys. Tucker had previously pleaded

guilty to the one charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driv- ing.

The judge heard how Tuckerwas

the first person to run to the victim after the collision. He wanted to apologise to the victim and his fam- ily.

Aswell as the jail term, the judge

also banned Tucker from driving for four years and four months. PC Derek Mole, of Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "If Tucker had abided by the law, this collision would have been completely avoided. "He chose to drive in a dangerous manner, without any regard for other motorists, as he was rushing to get home and I hope his time in jail gives him further time to reflect on his actions. “The rules of the road are there

for a reason and I’d like to remind motorists to abide by them, not only for their safety but for the safety of others aswell."
