Death of former mayor who fought for homes

FORMER Mayor of Maidstone, Daniel Moriarty, has died, aged 73. Mr Moriarty, whowas mayor for

the civic year starting in 2015, had lived in Maidstone all his life. His parents were from Tralee, County Kerry, but he was born at Pembury Hospital, and spent his early years in Fant. He eventually became a council member for Park Wood, where he lived for more than 25 years. He worked at Whatman paper

mill for 35 years, but retired early on medical grounds after a triple heart bypass. He became involved in politics in

his 20s after meeting Labour’s Ernie Flood, who was a plumber at the paper mill and served as mayor in 1980-81. Mr Moriarty said in 2014: “I was

not politically-minded, but I started doing work in the community.” Hewas first elected in ParkWood

as a Labour councillor in 2001 after retiring from his job. In 2008, mid- way through his second term, he switched allegiance to the Liberal

Democrats, with whom he parted company after being voted out in 2010. Twoyears later, he returned to the council as an Independent. He regarded himself not as “a

town hall councillor”, but cared passionately for his community, and became closely involved with Golding Homes during the regen- eration of Park Wood. His commitmentwas particularly

to decent homes, play areas and care for the elderly. Heenjoyed playing golf and, hav-

ing played rugby for Sidcup, re- mained a keen fan of the sport, supporting London Irish and Eng- land. His niece, Shirley Moriarty, as-

sisted him during his civic year as sadly, his wife, Lana, had her own health problems. He was a proud father to Kelly,

and grandfather to her two sons Jake and Connor. Mr Moriarty died on Monday,

May 8. His funeral took place on Wednesday,May31, atVinters Cre- matorium.

News Worries about

migrant riots THE threat of migrants caus- ing havoc to British holiday makers this summer emerged once again amid reports UK lorries and cars are being held up in Calais by burning road- blocks. Gangs of migrants – frus-

trated by being unable to get into Britain via northern French ports – are starting to disrupt routes in and out of the port. The recent clearing of the large ‘jungle’ camp was meant to deal with incursions at the docks and at the Channel Tun- nel site further inland. Truck- ers reported roads being blocked by felled trees which are then set ablaze. If the port at Calais closes, Operation Stack on the M20 will almost certainly be imple- mented, causing misery to Kent. Dover MP Charlie Elphicke

said: “These images have chill- ing echoes of the chaoswe saw in Calais last summer. We must work again to stop these dangerous people traffickers putting the lives of tourists and truckers at risk.”
