Mind Aber’s Art Group: Paintings on exhibition at the Morlan until February 20 (Pic. Alun Williams) EXHIBITING at the Morlan
Centre until February 20 is a collection showcasing the work of Mind Aberystwyth’s Art Group. A variety of pieces in different media have been produced by 11 members of the Art Group who meet weekly on Tuesday mornings between 10am and 12pm. The group is run by Kate Saunders, a Mental Health Coordinator with Mind Aberystwyth. The aim is to offer support to people who either want to maintain a good level of mental health or are currently benefitting from the supportive, creative environment that the group offers. Kate Saunders told The Herald:
“The Art Group is an inclusive group of all ages, backgrounds and artistic
abilities. We try to support members in developing their own artistic skills and ideas during the sessions, and we also participate in community projects and visit local exhibitions.’ Mind Aberystwyth report that it has
been shown that creative activities such as painting, sculpting, drawing and photography are beneficial to people with mental health problems. They are relaxing and rewarding hobbies which can lower stress levels and leave someone feeling clear and calm. Creating art provides a distraction, giving the brain a break from its usual thoughts and worries. It can also allow someone to express feelings that are too difficult to put into words. The exhibition can be seen at the Morlan Centre, on the corner of Queens
Road and North Parade, until February 20. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm. Mind Aberystwyth is a mental health charity based at The Mill, Mill Street, Aberystwyth. Although it is one of 146 local groups affiliated to Mind UK, it a local organisation by local people for local people, and provides advice, information and support for those affected by mental distress, including their family, friends and supporters. ‘Stressful time’ led to desperate measures A 27-YEAR-OLD man from
Talbybont admitted that he was going through a ‘stressful time’ when he was caught red handed for a stealing a bottle of wine from a local store. Luke Anthony Drew of Emporium
appeared before Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (Jan 18) and pleaded guilty to an offence of theft, where he stole a bottle of wine valued at £7.99 from Spar Stores in Aberystwyth. Helen Tench, prosecuting, told
the court that just after midnight on December 18, 2016, the defendant entered Spar stores and placed a bottle of wine under his coat. Drew was caught by a member
of staff and when challenged by his actions, he became uncooperative until the police arrived at the scene. Ms Tench added that Drew gave a
confused account in his interview and made no further comment about the wine he placed under his coat.
Defending himself at court,
Drew expressed that at the time of the incident, he was going through ‘a stressful time’ and was ‘desperate to
have something to drink’. Magistrates dealt with the matter
by imposing a fine of £40, prosecution costs of £60 and a surcharge of £30.
