BORTH UNITED returned
to league action at Abermule on Saturday (Jan 14), knowing that three points would keep the pressure on Kerry at the top of the league. However, Abermule, with the
prolific Dave Anthony and fellow striker Connor Stacey in their team, would give the Crows’ defence a difficult afternoon. So it proved, with Anthony going
close on numerous occasions with either the post or crossbar coming to Borth’s rescue. Abermule’s pressure eventually
paid off as Tommy Jones scored with 10 minutes remaining of the half. Despite going in at half a goal

ON A WET and windy Saturday
(Jan 14), Aberaeron were keen to avenge their defeat at Machynlleth earlier in the season. There was a welcome return for
Dan James and Ryan Jones from their travels as well as James Hemmings
after a groin injury. The home side started well playing
excellent football and taking the game to their opponents high up the pitch with slick passing and movement. Matty Davies had netted a brace
after 10 minutes, such was Aberaeron’s dominance of the ball. The first goal came after a combination of short passing in midfield opened up space

Davies treble downs Mach
down the wing for David Evans who turned inside and fed Davies, who finished at the near post high into the roof of the net. Two minutes later, Davies received
the ball in the area with his back to goal but the Mach defence allowed him to turn without any pressure, allowing him to score well into the bottom corner. Aberaeron continued to terrorise
the Machynlleth defence and scored a third via the best move of the match. Ryan Jones won the ball well in
defence and released the lively Gareth Evans, who carried the ball forward, passed inside for Mikey Gornall who, in turn, released the overlapping Gareth Lewis to score deftly in the corner of the net. Overall an excellent first half display. The second half saw Machynlleth
gain a foothold in the game as the home side released their foot off the gas and the game deteriorated in to petty fouls and needless bookings. During this period, Aberaeron gave
away a penalty when Barry Edwards brought down the Machynlleth forward and was then booked for questioning this decision. The penalty was dispatched in to the top corner which raised the hopes of the visitors. Within minutes of the restart, a
hopeful ball over the home defence saw the Mach striker through only for Barry Edwards to race out of his area and foul the onrushing striker. The referee had no option but
to brandish a second yellow card to Edwards, which meant a sending off. Ryan Jones put on the gloves and performed well with a couple of good saves and timely aerial punches. This seemed to inject some
urgency into the home team and it saw Matty Davies complete his hat trick to finish off the game. Manager Jason Jones, while happy
with the three points, will again be left to count the cost of his teams picking up needless bookings, especially from his senior members of the squad who just do not learn from their mistakes.

down, Borth were still in the match and Abermule would later come to rue the great chances they had to at least go in with a greater lead instead of a slender 1-0 half time score. Sadly, only 10 minutes of the second
half was played before there was a serious injury to Abermule’s goalscorer, Tommy Jones, with the match being stopped while an ambulance was called to treat the injury. The thoughts of all at Borth United FC and The Herald go out to Tommy for a speedy recovery. On the resumption of play, Borth
seemed to take the initiative and lone striker Liam Lewis was instrumental in Borth’s open play and with crosses coming in from both wings, it seemed only a matter of time before Borth would level the scores. Liam Lewis duly obliged with a
