BTM Talks evenings earlier in the year. Describing herself as a born adventurer (her father undertook similar experiences driving through Africa in the 1950s) Zoe’s bug for two-wheeled motorised trans- port started when she was working in Paris in the 1980s. She had a friend at Peugeot who encouraged her to buy a scooter as the best way to get around the city and she never looked back. Martin’s back- ground is in the Civil Service and he is now part of the Motorcycle Volunteer team at Brooklands.

Zoe’s first solo long distance trip was in 2012, riding across America using National Geographic maps. In the Midwest there were times when she didn’t see people for two days. The result was that she suffered mind games and became convinced that someone was stalking her. Martin also experi- enced similar issues on his trip to the north. In his case he convinced himself he was going to run out of money and this in the end affected the route he took. Both Zoe and Martin have books out that are available from the Museum Shop. Zoe Cano’s Bonneville Go or Bust describes her 10,000km (6,250 miles) journey on a classic Triumph Bonneville in 2012, the hottest summer on record. Martin’s book War Bike: British Military Motorcycling is a history of the early years of the motorcycle in a military capacity, from its testing at Brooklands

through to service in the First World War.

The Christmas Lunch ended with the Winter Prize Draw which has raised an estimated £13,000 for the Scoreboard project. Thanks must go again to Angela Hume for another successful event (indeed a year of successful BTM trips, rallies and dinners) and to our guest speakers Zoe and Martin. Next year’s Christmas Lunch is scheduled for 10th December, although Angela isn’t taking bookings quite yet (the BTM Treasurer would however be happy to take your cash in advance!)
