regarding October’s driver salary survey. Te survey found that many operations are short bus drivers, but responses were divided when asked if raising pay by $1 or $2 would be an effective retention strategy.

“Yes, we are short about 15 drivers to be fully staffed. Not only would raising pay help [us] stay competitive with surrounding jobs, but offering benefits to substitute drivers would [improve] incentives to stay.”

— Wyndy Jackson, Lead Coordinator Lyon County (Nev.) School District aka Instagram user @hootyhiker

“I know of districts paying as much as $21 an hour and still struggle to fill seats. It’s not a pay problem.”

— Kodie Shamrock, Product Specialist Leonard Bus Sales, Deposit, N.Y. via Facebook

Te following comments are responses to recent STNonline.com articles:

Te blog “Replace, Refurbish or Retrofit Aging School Buses?” (stnonline. com/go/ce) by Robert T. Pudlewski, discussed how long school buses should be used, and recommended looking at the funding or capital to determine when buses should be replaced.

“Hi Robert, Tank you for your blog on replace, refurbish and retrofit. I was wondering if there is an average cost associated with replacing a bus subfloor when doing a retrofit?”

— Chris Drahman, Sr. Vice President of Sales & Marketing Coosa Composites in Nashville, Tenn.

Editor’s Note: According to Pudlewski, cost is determined by many factors, such

as bus age, condition and size, as well as OEM and state required components. Are the floor supports rusted through? What type of school bus is it and what is the passenger capacity? Is the subfloor made of marine-grade plywood? Is the exterior metal, cold steel, galvanized aluminum or zinc-coated? Cost is subject to all of these factors, but when work is performed internally, costs can run as high as $15,000, including labor.
