Bravo,

Nicole Portee, Denver

Public Schools!

“Everything that I’ve tried to do has been with the intent to create solutions around concerns,” Portee said. She added that she incorporates parent feedback and wish lists to make DPS transportation as flexible and high-performing as it can be. “We tried to make sure that we were communicating on every level,” she added, stressing the need for intentional com- munity engagement. Tis extends from assemblies held with students and how transportation staff are trained on talking points, to mailers sent home to parents and how information is communicated with district administration and other departments. “While parents may not know the driv-

er’s name,” Portee commented, “When (the big yellow bus) pulls up, it always sends a message of ‘safe and secure’ and parents

have a satisfaction in knowing that, ‘My student will get to school safe.’” SHOWING RESTRAINT

But rather than retrofit existing buses with money that could be better spent in the classroom or other transportation pro- grams, Portee requested early on that newly purchased buses already be equipped with the seat belts. DPS approved and received its first order of four Type C buses with three-point belts in May 2016. To date, the district has added 43 more similarly
