decade, the largest of any major U.S. city. Since the imple- mentation of the Denver Plan in 2006, almost 2,000 more students are graduating every year, and over 80 percent more are going on to college. Te next chapter in that story is about to begin, as Superin-


tendent Tom Boasberg steps down from his position this year. Portee called Boasberg “an extraordinary leader that always supported transportation and my leadership” and confirmed that the district has consulted with and involved her in their search for a replacement. Her most proud career achievement at DPS, Portee shared, has been taking her department from being “just” the transpor- tation department to one “that is truly valued and is allowed to sit at the table with decision-makers to determine how to best support a student.” And though she realizes that there is always another mountain to climb, she expressed her excitement over


what she and her team have been able to achieve. In surveying those successes, she explained that she sees transportation departments across the country becoming more visible and more of a priority as districts look to become more innovative and fiscally responsible in supporting students and transporting them safely. In light of recent negative attention on school buses, she proposed that there is no more oppor- tune time for transportation directors to “really educate our school districts on the importance of the work that we do.” As Boasberg put it, the district strives to keep “moving for-


ward with equity as our north star.” Nicole Portee’s leadership of the district transportation department and her collaborative efforts at the district and state level cement her place as an invaluable part of that endeavor. For DPS students, parents, administration and for Portee, the sky’s the limit. ●
