he Paramus Public School District’s fatal school bus crash is not only spurring new state and federal legislation on lap-shoulder belts, but is also bringing more public awareness to the importance of driver train- ing and providing more accurate directions.


Te school bus, driven by district employee Hudy Muldrow, 77, was one of three


transporting East Brook Middle School students along New Jersey Route 80 on a May 17 field trip to historic Waterloo Village. All three buses missed their exit. Te other two buses got back on-route and arrived safely at their destination. However, Muldrow allegedly attempted an illegal U-turn in front of oncoming traffic to use a cut-through that is reserved for emergency vehicles and was struck by a dump truck. Te bus carried 38 students and seven adults, and the bus body was sheared from its chassis. It landed on its left side, perpendicular to traffic, its front end mangled. Killed in the crash were a 10-year-old student and a 51-year-old teacher, while the others on board, including Muldrow, suffered injuries, some of which were poten- tially life-threatening. A week later, Muldrow appeared in Morris County Superior Court on two counts


of reckless vehicular homicide, If found guilty, he faces 5-10 years in jail on each count. He surrendered his CDL to the court. News stories from various outlets reported that New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicle records showed that Muldrow had violations resulting in 14 sus-
