Voyages to Antiquity adds second cruise to Iceland

Hollie-Rae Merrick hollie@travelweekly.co.uk

Eastern Mediterranean specialist Voyages to Antiquity is adding a second cruise to Iceland following “huge demand” for the one-ship operator’s 2017 programme.

The line has predominately been known over the years for its Aegean cruises, but next year it

will offer new destinations and Aegean Odyssey will sail from the UK for the first time. The maiden 15-day cruise to

Iceland, departing from London Tilbury on June 29, 2017, is already more than 60% booked despite not being sold in the US or Australia yet. According to managing director Jos Dewing, the demand from the UK market in particular prompted the addition of a second departure, on August 8. “We’d thought that adding new

itineraries would be popular, but it has far exceeded our expectations,” Dewing said. “Because we are adding ports and itineraries, we

released our 2017 programme four months later than usual, but despite that we are 41% up year on year.” Dewing insisted that the line’s

move to introduce destinations away from the eastern Med was not made for security reasons. He said sailings in that region for this year had limited availability and bookings were still coming through. The UK, he said, had become

Voyages to Antiquity’s top source market over the past year, accounting for 40% of sales. As a result, Dewing is investing

more in the trade, and says funding for co-operative advertising, training and fam trips has been doubled for this year. The online training platform has

been refreshed with new modules on 2017 destinations. Dewing said the next stage would be to add gamification to spur agents to earn more rewards, such as fam trip places and bonus commission, by

completing a new course element. vtaexpert.com
