“I couldn’t understand why every-


thing kept dying but I talked to my neighbour and she told me about walnut trees” says Jane Budd. (Black walnut trees leech a substance called juglone into the soil; it kills several types of plants, but far from all.) Through this exchange of information, she turned what appeared as a negative into her best feature. She planted hosta, spirea, yucca and lily of the valley below the three walnut trees and made them her garden focal point. She also fine tunes everything to keep it neat. v
