Nutmeg “Nuggets” A TASTE OF HISTORY AND
INNOVATION IN OXFORD, CT T
ucked away in rural Oxford, Connecticut is a gem of a place for a beer nut like me. OEC (short for Ordinem Ecentrici Coctores, which roughly translates to Order of the Eccentric Boilers) is a brewery affiliated with distributor B. United International, who
have been importing the best traditionally made beers, ciders, mead and sake from around the world since 1994. After B. United centralized their operations to Oxford, building a beautiful office and warehouse space, plans were made to start a brewery dedicated to traditional (and sometimes forgotten) brewing techniques and beer styles. Lambics, gruits, groditskes, berlinerweisse, goses, sours blended with meads…if they can brew it, they will!
I first heard about OEC sometime around its grand opening in the summer of 2014,
thanks to a chance meeting my husband had with Assistant brewer Tony Pellino. He brought home a business card, knowing my love of craft beer, and my interest was peaked. Being fa- miliar with B. United’s incredible portfolio and the amount of care and innovation they take to ensure each beer is sold at its best, I knew that this venture was going to be incredible. I made it out for the first time that fall, and I immediately fell in love.
The place is a wonder of experimentation mixed with a reverence for long-held and
even forgotten brewing traditions. I took a “Three Sour Tour” (as it was called) of the facilities this May, which revealed the very many projects and experiments being undertaken, from the various barrel aging rooms to the greenhouses and fruit trees being grown to source as much of their materials right from their land. They have even built a bakery which will start baking bread using spent grain and run-off from the brewing process in the near future. We tasted it; it was delicious. There was talk of fermenting vinegars and other things in the future as well.
This is not your father’s fizzy yellow beer. This isn’t even your bitter double IPA. Don’t come expecting what you are familiar with. These beers are primarily sour, are complex and sometimes difficult to get into. The price point is more akin to wine, due to the long fermen- tation processes, blending, aging and materials used, but at about $12-15 a 750ml bottle is very affordable. Come with an open mind, bring a friend and picnic lunch (and check the website to see what food truck might be there). Start with a flight and taste all OEC has to of- fer. The staff will happily answer all of your questions, and the tasting room is so lovely you’ll never want to leave. Plus there’s a foosball table. Check their Facebook page for the latest information.
OEC At B. United International 7 Fox Hollow Road Oxford, CT 06478 Open: Saturdays, 12-7pm. Check their website for special events.
