Personality profile
the seamless leap into mid- life with little reproach – loving the Royal Family – and admits he’d “bite off their hand” for an MBE.
“I’m probably on a black list somewhere”
In fact, he awards himself a Mincer of the British Empire in his upcoming tour, which takes him to Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells in April. Although, he admits, rather sadly: “It's never happened, so I'm obviously not favoured by the Establishment. I think I've been too rude about the Royal Family over the years. I'm probably on some kind of black list somewhere.”
On stage in his latest tour,
he’ll also be telling tales on some of his closest showbiz friends, with a particular pop at Joan Collins, who, on their first meeting, he described as “just as frosty as I’d feared”. Back in the day, she also instigated legal action against him for trading on her name as The Joan Collins Fan Club.
Today, he counts her among his closest friends and the pair often holiday together at her villa in the south of France.
He delights: “She’s as
camp as Christmas and loads of fun. I tell a rather long story about how I once saved her life in a swimming pool in St Tropez. It's a true story, which I won't give away now, but it's a long, meandering tale that fills the first half.”
He credits Paul O’Grady, another friend – and neighbour – for his move to Kent.
“I had to call in the ghost busters”
Julian says: “He called me when the house came up for sale and it was love at first sight. I’ve been here nine years and it’s kept me motivated to earn the money to bring it back to its former glory and it’s just about there now.”
