Lizzie Yarnold visits Brookfield Infants to ‘team up to shake up’ with Change4Life


This summer, Change4Life teamed up with Disney to inspire children in the South East to get active with the launch of this year’s new 10 Minute Shake Up campaign. The campaign aimed to help children reach the minimum 60 minutes of physical activity they need every day through 10 minute bursts of activity, inspired by Disney characters.


Currently, just 26% of boys and 16% of girls aged five to 15 in the South East meet their recommended 60 minutes of activity every day.


The 10 Minute Shake Up campaign got kids to join one of four Disney teams, including Frozen, Big Hero 6, Monsters and Toy Story. There were also lots of new and exciting 10 minute games and activities for children to play to try and help their team win by doing as many Shake Ups as they can.


Lizzie Yarnold, British skeleton racer, commented:


“As a skeleton racer, living an active lifestyle has helped me get where I am today and exercise is a crucial part of my daily routine. Sometimes it can


be hard to find time to fit in the right amount of activity on a daily basis, but breaking this down into manageable 10 minute chunks is a really useful way to boost activity levels to keep kids happy and healthy!”


Kent County Council, Director of Public Health, Andrew Scott-Clark said: “It is important to start early to support children’s physical and mental health and wellbeing, which is why we are keenly supporting this national PHE campaign in raising the issue of healthy weight and exercise, plus providing information about local support. It is crucial that all resources are tapped, particularly as we tackle childhood obesity across the whole system of services across Kent. Exercise is vital to wellbeing, health and academic achievement; we encourage schools and families with young children, throughout the county to join the 10 Minute Shake Up.”


Over a third of children in the UK are overweight, yet 79% of parents with an overweight child do not recognise that they are, and of those that do, 41% do not realise that it is a health risk. Furthermore, parents tend to overestimate how active their children are.


Although the 10 Minute Shake Up initiative only ran throughout the
