ART AND DESIGN
ENGLAND Pupils should be taught to develop new techniques... with... an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
• Visit a local supermarket and look at the packaging of different types of pre-packed cheese. Some are sold in waxed paper, some in plastic wrap, some in thin wooden boxes. (If this is not possible, use pictures of different types of cheese or bring in a range of clean packaging.)
• Together or in groups, evaluate the different types of packaging. Suggested questions are as follows: • Does the packaging suggest anything about the cheese? • Which packaging would make you want to buy the cheese? • Why is cheese packaged in different ways?
• Give out the following brief.
• The Welsh Cheese Company currently sells a range of farmhouse cheese, and is looking to introduce a new type of cheese on to the market. They use only milk that is locally sourced from Welsh farms. The new cheese is a soft cheese which is quite mild in taste. The cheese also contains different kinds of fruit.
• Ask the children to design appropriate packaging for the cheese.
• They need to think about where it comes from. Should it reflect the fact that it comes from Wales? That it is farmhouse cheese?
• What would make it stand out from the rest of the cheeses, so that people would want to buy it? • What sort of packaging would be best for this type of cheese? • Should it be really modern packaging so that people know that the cheese is something new? • Encourage the children to work onscreen or on paper to share their ideas and produce their final designs.
• Display the finished designs and together discuss a suitable way to evaluate them – e.g. a scoring card against the criteria.
