• Ask the children to read the recipe for Crumbly Cheese Straws, which is provided as a download.

• Get them to underline any words whose meaning they don’t know, and then look them up in a dictionary or an online dictionary to find out what they mean.

• Allow less able readers to work in a pair with a stronger reading buddy. • Share findings as a class to ensure that the text and its words are fully understood. • Challenge fast finishers to prepare questions about the text to ask others in the class.

• Ask them to work in pairs to discuss how they might represent the information in a different way – e.g. picture sequence, flow chart.

• Then ask them to think about an audio representation rather than a visual one. Get them to read the recipe aloud again to each other in their pairs to focus on the identification of the key elements for a successful audio text – e.g. clarity, pronunciation, awareness of audience (young children, for a radio programme or for someone who is not confident about cooking).

• If time and facilities allow, follow up these ideas with the creation of some visual and some audio representations of this recipe and then review them with each other for their effectiveness.
