While working/cooking
• Where does mustard powder come from? [it is made from the seeds of the mustard plant, which are dried and ground to produce a powder]
• This recipe uses plain flour. What is the difference between plain and self-raising flour, which is used in cakes and muffins? [Self-raising flour contains baking powder, which adds air to the mixture. Plain flour is just flour – it doesn’t have anything extra in it to help the mixture rise. Plain flour is used for such things as pastry, which don’t need to be light and airy. In recipes that include self-raising flour, you can use plain flour and add your own baking powder.]
• The recipe says you should knead the dough lightly. What does that mean? Why do you think it says that? What would happen if you kneaded it energetically? [here it means you should not touch it much, just enough to make sure it is smooth; if it is kneaded too much, the result will be very heavy and dense – a bit tough]
• Check the food in the oven. Tidying up

Quick test/quiz • Name and describe two skills you used in this recipe and how you used them. [e.g. mix/stir – rubbing in – rubbing the flour mixture with the margarine by using fingertips, until it resembles breadcrumbs]
• What type of knife was used to mix the water and flour? [palette knife]
• Describe one piece of equipment and what you used it for. [e.g. rolling pin – to roll out the pastry until it was the right size and thickness]
• Bonus question: Spell ‘flour dredger’.
Word search • Ask the children to complete the activity sheet. [e.g. Word search [not completed for sample. Could be a bank of activities from which authors choose e.g. word search, sequencing pictures, sorting, matching pictures to words etc.]
Sequencing sheet
• Ask the children to cut out, muddle up and then stick the recipe pictures back in the correct order.
• Use this to talk about the recipe and what they did. Review
1. What did you do well? 2. What would you do differently next time?
• Ask the children ask if they enjoyed doing this – and suggest that they might do it at home.
