lead to Athens, a quaint little mural- enhanced village well worth the visit. We headed cross country to

parkway and that efficient but 18-wheeled-truck-infested Hwy 401. We saw farms, big houses and rivers of grass flowing between the rock island outcrops until we hit the impressive gateway into Gananoque (originally built in 1927). Gananoque (www.gananoque.

ca) was first founded in 1792 by the loyalist Joel Stone and has since been rediscovered by lots and lots of tourists. We toured the historic main street, but the real fun is beside the river among the inlets, marinas and boats. We wanted to stop at Muskie Jake’s Tap and Grill in the majestic Gananoque Inn, but time was against us. So, promising ourselves that we

would return soon, we headed north looking for Hwy. 15 and home.... but got lost. We wandered up County Rd

32 and did find Hwy. 15, but immediately veered off onto County Road 33 to Lyndhurst. The road just made us go that way, and what a tour of discovery that turned out to be. First, the road is great with lots

of twists, turns and plenty to see. And then you hit Lyndhurst (www. rideau-info.com) with the most incredible bridge you will ever see. The fact that you cross over on the oldest bridge in Ontario is bragging rights enough, but wait until you see it. The bridge is an incredible arched stone structure with sweeping abutments that would make any roman bridge look darn near shabby. Trashing the roman theme that

“all roads lead to Rome”, we found that all roads (at least around here)

Addison (home of Calamity Jane’s Restaurant), then on to Greenbush and, following County Rd 7, to Rocksprings. We continued on No. 7 down Brandy Hill (where local legend claims a wagon of brandy was lost during the probation years), made a right turn onto Crystal Road and into Eastons Corners. We

stumbled onto County Rd 16 and there we were, back in Merrickville. Luckily for us, we were just in

time for a cool refreshing beverage at Harry McLean’s Pub & Courtyard Garden Patio, probably the only grass patio anywhere, and then to Ottawa. Where did the time go? I don’t

know, but it was a great tour even if we forgot all about the King’s Highway.
