Fundraiser to race for mum

FOR Dominic Taylor, running the London Marathon will take on added significance as he seeks to raise money for brain tumour research. The 34-year-old, from New- bridge, will pound the London streets on Sunday, April 26, with mum Susan at the forefront of his mind. For it will be 17 years to the

day since Mrs Taylor died from a brain tumour at the age of 49. This is her son’s first mara- thon, though he is no stranger to running to raise money for the charity Brain Tumour Re- search, having completed a “magnificent seven” challenge of four 10 kilometre races and three half-marathons in Wales and England last year, raising £800. “I was 17 at the time and could

only watch as my mum under- went surgery, then radiotherapy and had epileptic seizures. She survived for just six months and 10 days,” said Mr Taylor, a ter- ritory manager for a food sales company. “This will be my first and last marathon and I am doing it for my mum and to help other fami- lies affected by this dreadful dis- ease. “I know the event will be both physically and emotionally chal-

lenging but I think it will be a fit- ting tribute.” He will be supported by wife Melanie and daughter Kira, four. “The pain of losing my mum

never goes away. I have a wife and daughter she never got to meet,” said Mr Taylor. “Continuing to remember her in this way is very important

Safety risk when using unlicensed taxis is high

CAERPHILLY Trading Standards are warning residents in the borough not to use unlicensed taxis under any cir- cumstances, due to the high safety risk for passengers. In recent weeks, the department has received a number of complaints re- garding the high volume of illegal taxis operating in the area, which are often advertised via social networking sites. These vehicles are not subject to the strict testing that licensed taxis must comply to and so they pose a dangerous risk to users. This testing goes above and beyond that of a standard MOT to ensure the absolute safety of those who wish to use taxis. Licensed Caerphilly County Borough Council Private Hire Vehicles and Hackney Carriages are distinguished from illegal taxis by a white or yellow plate affixed to the rear of the vehicle identifying the vehicle as a licensed taxi and a smaller license affixed to the inside of the windscreen. Each licensed taxi driver must also

wear a photo ID at all times, containing their name and unique licence number. The penalty for operating an unli- censed taxi is a fine of up to £1,000 each time the vehicle is used and a further fine of up to £1,000 for failing to have a license to drive a taxi. Those operating such taxis will also be liable for a fine of up to £5,000 and six Penalty Points.
