POOL & SPA INDUSTRY Happy New Year!

Following a well earned break for the whole industry, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of events planned for the months ahead

I

hope that you have had time to reflect on the past year and are now looking forward to the promise that 2015 may bring your business. So much of what was prepared in 2014 is likely to come to fruition this year. For instance, various parts of the domestic swimming pool standards will be available to purchase and work continues on the final drafting of the standards for ‘Mini Pools’ and the first meeting of TC 402 WG4 for ‘Spas and Hot Tubs’ took place in Berlin just before Christmas. BISHTA is chairing the European meeting for WG4 while SPATA continues to be representing the UK on the development of European domestic pool standards. The revision of the Management of Spa Pools publication was held up due to some staffing vacancies at Public Health England, but this work should now resume. BISHTA would like to see even more practical advice offered to the industry about using spas and hot tubs and has submitted a number of comments for consideration.

Since the legislation came into force on the use of hydrogen peroxide (and some other chemicals) as explosive precursors, I am not aware of any issues arising for our industry and so hopefully this has been due to a combination of early warning, prompt attention by the relevant manufacturers and some patience by the retailers, while their clients waited for their applications to the Home Office for a licence. For those

customers that already had sufficient stocks of hydrogen peroxide, or had already closed their pool, now may be an appropriate time to remind them that they will need to apply for a licence (unless you are going to offer them a maintenance contract so that they never store hydrogen peroxide on their premises). SPATA will again be looking to host a series of regional meetings in the spring, so please watch out for the weekly enewsletter for details of when and where they are. Richard Carrington is looking forward to becoming the new BSPF President, taking over from Issy Rickards Sanger, who will be performing her last duties at the Industry Gala Dinner. Richard has confirmed that he will be hosting his President’s Weekend on 18 to 20 September in London and more details will be available at SPATEX and provisional bookings can be made for his Weekend at the BSPF stand, or back in the BSPF office after the show.

From a future President to a Past President

now, as Stephen Booth and Claire Asher were delighted to host Stephen’s Past Presidents’ Meal which was held on 14 and 15 November 2014 at The Lincoln Hotel (in Lincoln). Stephen and Claire were joined by nine other Past Presidents and their wives / partners. A lively dinner, with plenty of jokes and delicious food was enjoyed by all and a relaxing stroll through the historic streets of Lincoln, enjoying the cathedral and castle surrounds with the indulgence of afternoon tea on the Saturday, all made for a perfect weekend! Unfortunately there are no photos of the occasion that I am aware of, just memories! In terms of SPATEX 2015, the Ricoh Arena again promises to provide an exciting mixture of exhibition and entertainment space. Visitors and exhibitors will have a very busy time seeing over 100 suppliers

I hope that you have had time to reflect on the past year and are now looking

at the Show and with the excellent ISPE workshops also including a spa day there should be something for everyone. If that is not enough, a second seminar area will be offering other relevant topics, so congratulations not only to Ross Alcock, but also to Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and the SPATEX Directors for their hard work. During SPATEX, SPATA and BISHTA will be hosting the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards in the E-on Suite at the Ricoh Arena, with the ISPE. This year Paul Boardman will be providing the entertainment and the music will be provided by the ‘Rewind’ band. Everyone coming to the Show (whether or not they are BISHTA / SPATA members) are very welcome to attend this industry event. If you would like to attend, the dress code is black tie optional. Please contact the office to confirm your booking and tickets are priced at just £69.95 + VAT per person. Once again I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the sponsors for supporting this event. Have a great year.
