NEWS IN BRIEF

MANSFIELD POOL TO BE NAMED AFTER PARALYMPIANS A Mansfield swimming pool is to be renamed in honour of three local Paralympic swimmers. Councillors backed a motion to change the name of the competition pool at the Water Meadows to the Hynd’s and Henshaw Competition Pool, in recognition of the achievements of local Paralympian swimmers, Charlotte Henshaw, Ollie and Sam Hynd.

Councillor John Smart, Chairman of the Licensing Committee at Mansfield District Council, who proposed the motion, said: “This would show the country our support and the pride we have in, Ollie, Sam and Charlotte. “The Council rightly

recognised the achievements of Rebecca Adlington by changing the name of the Sherwood Street Baths to the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre. “We should all be united in showing equal support to our Paralympian swimmers who represented this area; they have achieved so much and have inspired other young people with disabilities.”

DEATH OF GIRL IN HOTEL POOL SEES NO CRIMINAL CHARGES No criminal charges will be brought over the death of a three-year-old girl who drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Lancashire.

Jane Bell, from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, got into difficulty at the Dalmeny Hotel in St Annes in August last year. Following the incident, a 40-year-old woman was arrested, however after reviewing material, the Crown Prosecution Service said no further action would be taken. The Crown Prosecution

Service’s Joanna White said: “I have carefully considered all the material submitted, including a number of witness statements and CCTV footage from the hotel, and I have concluded that there should be no criminal proceedings against her.

Barr + Wray Dives In To Revamp Pools At Inverness Leisure

Barr + Wray has started work on the pools at Inverness Leisure, having won the contract to refurbish the existing filtration equipment and install a state of the art backwash water recovery filtration system.

Main contractor Morrison Construction, part of Galliford Try Plc, appointed the aqua leisure specialists for the work at the Inverness Aquadrome and Sports Centre close to Bught Park. Barr + Wray is refurbishing the filtration equipment used in both the 25m competition pool and the three flume leisure pools. There will be an accompanying cutting-edge recovery system installed, which limits the amount of waste water. Ultraviolet disinfection systems will also be installed at the site to maintain the highest possible water quality. These enhancements will also improve energy conservation and reduce costs through using less water and energy for heating. Ruaridh Cameron, Aftersales Director at Barr

+ Wray said: “The pools will benefit greatly from these new systems. Visitors will enjoy swimming in high quality water thanks to the new UV secondary disinfection systems we will be installing. “By investing in this equipment now, the Highland Council is demonstrating its commitment to the environment. We are confident the benefits of this system will be such that it will be of great interest to other local authorities across the UK.”

Work on the Inverness Leisure pools is due to be completed in February 2015. As an added benefit, the project is being carried out without the requirement to close the centre and the pools will remain open to the public throughout. While Barr + Wray is focusing on the pools, Morrison Construction is refurbishing the sports halls, fitness suites and climbing walls. This programme of work is the first to have taken place since 2008.

Donald Mclachlan, Regional Director at Morrison Construction Scotland – Highland, said: “Morrison Construction are delighted to be working in partnership with Barr + Wray to refurbish the Inverness Leisure pools.

“Sustainability and the environment are topics that are high on the agenda on this project. The local community will greatly benefit from this first class facility which is being significantly enhanced.”

Morrison Construction and Barr + Wray have worked together on numerous leisure centre projects across the UK, including the Pickaquoy Leisure Centre in Orkney, and will be putting this experience to good use in Inverness.
