If you’re retired, then grab the opportunity to enjoy all of your new spare time by getting out and about

he beauty of being retired is that, at last, you have time to visit a stately home, the theatre, cinema or gym, go shopping and indulge


in a lingering lunch afterwards. And because of the many concessions available to the over 60s it needn’t cost you much to enjoy a day out, either, and there’s transport help available for the less mobile and those without cars or who don’t drive. Our county boasts many places of historical or cultural interest with plenty more in nearby Surrey, Sussex and London. Delightful though these places are,


mature visitors often struggle with steep hills, narrow stairs and distances between sites and car parks. Happily, accessibility is much improved with attractions, such as Ightham Mote, Leeds and Sissinghurst Castles, routinely providing mobility aids,


including buggies, scooters and land trains. You can even trundle round the battlefield of 1066 on a mobility scooter! It’s worth noting that the 11-acre


gardens at Walmer Castle are level with wide paths, while Dover Castle’s tunnels and its Great Tower’s ground floor are accessible, even though the castle is built on a hill. Getting about


There’s no upper age limit on driving but you have to renew your licence at age 70 and every three years thereafter. If you develop a medical condition you must, by law, notify the DVLA.


TO STAY SAFE ON THE ROADS • Re-read the Highway Code and practise driving regularly.


• Have regular eye checks – the over 60s get them free. • Ensure your car remains appropriate to your needs. • Avoid driving in conditions that cause you anxiety – use public transport if necessary.
