DUCK HUNTING continued from pg 19

and, yes, more birds. What a duck hunting holiday! There is something different

about getting flocks of mallards to lift off the water, then finding a spot among the bulrushes to wait for them to return in about 15 to 20 minutes, do your shoot and then start again. There’s no sense shooting your birds all in one go at 6:30 am and then having nothing else for the rest of the day. You can do pothole hunting day

after day, cook a different duck recipe every night, or get the local restaurant to cook your birds up for you along with all the fixings. It’s an amazingly civilized way to do things. There was still the opportunity

to hunt over decoys early in the morning if we so desired, but I felt there was no need. I was really enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. There was also the chance to do a little run around an old farmstead with grain bins to have the dogs check out the area for some prairie chickens. If we really felt the need to branch out, there were other opportunities to go fishing in the lakes around the Qu’Appelle Valley for pickerel and pike. For any of us interested in

goose hunting (snow geese and Canada geese), there were plenty of outfitters happy to assist, but not until later in October, when the birds finally come down from up north. Until then, there were plenty of

ducks, including many blue wing teals, that we were able to shoot and eat. I particularly enjoyed that because they are normally gone by the time the season opens here in Ontario. I intend to return to

Saskatchewan for my duck hunting holiday. I look forward to more great hunting memories.
