horizon. Again we noted how great the roads were. Every paved road that we traveled on was just recently refinished − just for the benefit of us back-roaders, I guess. The ruins of St Raphaels turned out to be a majestic

burnt-out church, and this alone was worth the trip. We wandered around this national historic site, constructed in 1821 (destroyed by fire in 1970) and enjoyed the quiet, haunting surroundings. All too quickly, it seemed, we were back on the

road again. We ambled east, then south on route 34 to Lancaster, through limitless corn fields, where we discovered a cheese factory. The Glengarry Fine Cheese (http://www. glengarryfinecheese.com) factory turned out to be the

real thing. When I asked if the ingredients were local, our host went to the window and pointed out the farms feeding the factory. I was informed that the products were not just local but “local-local”. We tried some cheese, and it was so great we bought about four different kinds. I even signed up for a cheese-making course. We jumped Hwy. 401 at Lancaster and hit old Hwy

2 hugging the Saint Lawrence, heading back towards Cornwall. Old Hwy. 2 is always a winner with its fantastic vistas of the river, ships and countryside. Around Morrisburg we turned north, up to Winchester, over to Hallsville and then the 416 to home. The people were great, the sites were outstanding and

the roads were so smooth that even our biker colleagues would be happy.
