THEORY IN FOUNDATION PHASE CLASSROOMS: A LITERATURE REVIEW
Dr S Jaffe UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG
ABSTRACT
Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences asserts that intelligence is biologically based and it can represent itself in nine different ways. The theory provides a solid foundation upon which to identify value and develop students' abilities. This presentation seeks to understand the Howard Gardner's theory and to find out how it is implemented in the classroom. Using a wide spectrum of literature, the paper argues that Multiple Intelligence Theory has a profound impact on thinking and practice in education. It provides a comprehensive framework for equity and inclusion. It concluded that teachers should think of all intelligences as equally important. This is in great contrast to traditional education systems which typically places a strong emphasis on the development and use of verbal and mathematical intelligences. The study recommends that teachers should structure the presentation of material in a style which engages if not all, most of the intelligences.
