Figure 9: Disciplinary area identified by PPER (Gauteng)
There are 20 theses in the Gauteng region within the study period which focused on continuing education. These theses dealt with a wide range of in-service and workplace related training such as developing teachers in the internet to form virtual communities of practice. Disaggregation of theses over the ten year study period showed that there were theses focusing on continuing education in the first two years.
CONCLUSION
To sum the data produced on educational research during the period 1995 – 2004. In Gauteng region there are twelve sectors that have been identified for analysis. Of interest in this analysis are individual institutions priorities and emerging patterns of knowledge production over time in Gauteng region in relation to the South African historical developments. Another interesting fact about Gauteng region is because of its economic power it attracts students from all over South Africa, Africa and other continents. This fact suggests that the students are thus very diverse. The authors also found out that the universities differ in their interest in language and race issues given their different histories. Race and language issues are key in the South African context, because the legacy of apartheid persists today and acts on the protests and signs of hope during the post apartheid era. For areas of further research, it is recommended that attempt be made to extend the study by other researchers in other faculties other than education faculty in South Africa universities or other countries.
