Globally scholarship has historically had geographically a very lopsided, unbalanced pattern, with Western Europe and Northern America forming the international nerve centre of the international academic network, and the rest — the larger part of the world, not only geographically, but increasingly also demographically, economically and otherwise — occupying a rather peripheral place. This research investigated geographical patterns of authorship in the top three (by impact factor) journals in the field of Education, during the decade 2001-2010. The role of South African scholars in the production of top-impact knowledge in the field(s) of Education is very low. It appears as if the general profile raising of South African scholars is not echoed in the field(s) of Education. If the immanent SAERA (South African Education Research Association) wishes to play its part in WERA (World Education Research Association) this is a deficiency that should receive attention.
