AN ECO-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVE PoolSan is a chlorine-free water additive that is hypo-allergenic and non-corrosive and which has recently become the popular choice for high profile hotel pool managers. It uses traditional chemistry with an ionic aqueous solution containing copper, silver, zinc, aluminium, gold, manganese, nitrogen and iron, a combination which eliminates the need for chlorine, algaecides and flocculents. These ions bring about a change in the enzyme processes of algae and bacteria, breaking down their DNA structure and cell walls. These charged particles then flock together so they can be trapped more effectively by the filter. The ions maintain a stable residual in the water until they are used up by this process, and the product has a lower toxicity than chemicals such as chlorine or bromine. It is also possible to swim in the water immediately after the additive has been applied, as it does not need time to
dissipate in the manner of traditional chlorine treatment. PoolSan can improve the quality of the water whilst reducing the exposure of swimmers to chlorine, which some consider to be an irritant. PoolSan’s manufacturers also consider that it has a distinct advantage to owners and operators opening up their pools in spring, as it retains a residual level of sanitiser over the colder months.
