OABA UPDATE - by Bob Johnson, OABA President and CEO Recently the Florida Amuse-

ment Device and Attraction Ad- visory Committee met at the Florida State Fair’s Equestrian Center, hosted by Chuck Pesano, a Committee member along with representatives and guests from amusement parks, carnivals and fairs and family entertainment centers. Martha Leverock, from the

Greater Jacksonville Fair and Chuck both represent Florida’s Fairs, as appointed

by the Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Put- nam. Also attending was Bob Howenstein, with the Miami-Dade Fair, who observed the Com- mittee’s proceedings along with your Executive Director, Lisa Hinton. Another Committee member, Jerry Smithson,

an independent ride inspector and insurance consultant gave a presentation on Inflatable at- tractions incidents around the country and pre- sented facts and causes on these amusement devices. The State of Florida does not regulate or permit such amusement devices. Smithson will continue to monitor such incidents as there have been serious accidents in other states, especially when they are not anchored properly and have a tendency to take off, when there are high winds. In addition, John Aries, owner of FunSpot

Amusement Parks in Orlando and Kis- simmee reported on his amusement park’s expansion in Orlando encompass- ing a new, ten acre plot adjacent to their existing park off International Drive. Bill Castigliola, with Amusements of

America gave an update on the recent NAARSO training seminar held in Bran- son, Missouri and said that NAARSO would be meeting in Tampa in 2014. Over 250 people, many state inspectors attend this ride safety and certification program. The next meeting is scheduled for Sep-

tember 10, in the Orlando area and will get Lisa that information as these meet- ings are open to the public and fair man- agement. The OABA’s Annual 48th Annual Mem-
