Le Centre Aquatique créé par Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) se trouve au sud-est du Parc Olympique. Il comprend une section centrale permanente avec sièges additionnels temporaires installés sur les deux flancs. Ces sièges seront enlevés après les jeux.
Le corps principal du bâtiment comprend un toit en forme de vague qui s’élève depuis le sol. Sa hauteur ondule afin de répondre aux besoins de la piscine principale ainsi que de bassin de plongée principal. ZHA a travaillé en collaboration avec Arup pour l’éclairage du projet, tirant partie de l’expertise d’ODA, l’Agence londonienne pour le développement et le sport en Angleterre. Le plan devait répondre aux besoins des athlètes, des spectateurs et des diffuseurs. L’espace a été illuminé à la manière des vastes points de vente au détail. Les installations du hall principal sont masquées dans des ouvertures el- liptiques de toit qui abritent également les caméras et les enceintes audio. Dans la salle de piscine d’entraînement, où il n’est pas nécessaire de filmer, une solution d’éclairage permanent a été installée. Les batardeaux de toit sont alignés par un système de tissu à diffusion de lumière fluorescente créant un effet de caisson sur mesure.
