118 DECORATIVE & DESIGN / PRODUCT Clerkenwell

Design Week LONDON, UK MAY 22 - 24 2012

The design community in and around the Clerkenwell district of London threw open its doors at the end of May as part of a three day ‘week’ of events showcasing creative talent. The Familoe Building once again acted as a hub for the event, its dusty Victorian elegance providing the perfect back- drop for a selection of high-end design brands, whilst a few streets away The House of Detention offered a more youthful bazaar of products. The real beat of the event was to be found in the streets between the two as showrooms and practices of varying disciplines invited the public to talks and demonstrations of their work. www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com

Clearcut Lamp 9 Across

Inspired by the literature and cross- words of Georges Perec and the Surre- alist’s love of serious play, automatism and chance, Amy de Wit and Ornella Stocco took a crossword from a newspa- per and used it at as the generator of a series of objects. Through a process of word association the clues and answers of the cryptic crossword provided a se- ries of instructions: actions (Clearcut), qualities (Deadweight), descriptions (Tow Coloured) or entire narratives. www.across9.com
