different points along the needle to light each section: 70W for its lower tip, 150W for the central section and underside of the hub and 400W for the spire-like top section.


STADIUM STAIRS A series of cascade staircases run between the angled façade and the main body of the stadium. Here Lichtvision specified BEGA wall mounted, shielded floods to be set twelve metres apart, in line with the façade support columns.


The raised hill on which the stadium sits is ringed by steps linking the stadium en- trances with the surrounding landscaped park. These are illuminated by LED lighting embedded within the handrails.


LANDSCAPE LIGHTING Two lighting columns types are used for the pathways around the stadium. More than 200 Schrèder Tubulus Maxi luminaires - 6 metre tall columns with mixed opaque and clear glass heads - were installed to provide general lighting.


Along the western perimeter of the stadium site, a line of eighteen metre tall col- umns have been used. Custom designed by Lichtvision, each is topped by a multiple projector head used to flood light wider expanses of the surrounding stadium plaza. Fluorescent tubes backlight the column heads to mimic the appearance of the Tubu- lus pathway columns. www.lichtvision.com

KEY PLAYERS


The City Stadium in Poland and Donbass Arena in the Ukraine were the first of their countries’ venues to be completed in the run up to the Euros.


The City Stadium in Poznan was the first football arena completed in Poland to host this summer’s Euro tournament. 195 Phil- ips ColorBlast RGB LED projectors, plus a control system and software, were used to illuminate the outer façade of the Poznan stadium, thereby enabling dynamic colour changes. As a result, the Poznan arena is now endowed with the additional ability to evoke and build emotion during sporting events, as well as other entertainment events - such as concerts - taking place in the stadium. To illuminate the pitch, Philips’ ArenaVi-


sion MVF404 system was used: 300 lumi- naires at more than 2500 lux. Philips fixtures were also a key part of the Donbass Arena in East Ukraine. The stadium scheme – designed by Gilles Page in just one month – uses more than 10,000 different types of lamps, ranging from regular luminescent lamps to their innovative ArenaVision floodlight, 272 of which were used for the football field. These were targeted by the Philips office in Ukraine using laser sights. To underscore the grand boulevards leading up to the stadium, the architects


specified Hess Vedo luminaires – their slim, tapered pole, compact primary unit and the flat secondary reflector sus- pended over the primary housing lend the luminaire a discreet appearance during the day. The Vedo provides glare-free light that uniformly illuminates the spaces. Spectators pouring into the arena thus have an undisturbed view of the stadium’s floodlit blue-membrane exterior, the source of its nickname: ‘The Diamond of Donetsk’. www.lighting.philips.com www.hess.eu
