SWORDS ANGLING SHOW BY DEREK EVANS
THE ANGLING Show in Swords, Co Dublin was a resounding success, with an im- pressive array of tackle on display and casting demonstrations to suit most, if not all, facets of the sport. “I’m pleased with the turnout, we’re up on last year,” Hugh Bon- ner of Mara Media said.
The show was opened by John Wilson, renowned for his angling television programmes over the past 20 years.
Throughout the two days he of- fered expert advice to the many visitors and displayed his angling prowess in the impressive cast- ing pool.
A focal point of the show was the launch of two new angling guides by Minister of State for Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd. The publications, entitled: A Guide to Coarse Angling in the Erne and South Donegal and A Guide to Sea Angling on the East Coast are invaluable reference books for those new to the sport and also to tourists.

Both guides are free and available from Inland Fisheries Ireland at fishinginire-

Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association juvenile anglers Ian Howard from Mallow, Co Cork, Ciaran Reilly from Loughrea, Co Galway, and Fergal McKiernan from Athlone, Co Westmeath, were also on hand to demonstrate their fly-tying and casting skills. Ciaran and Fergal are members of their respective provincial fly-tying teams.
This year it is Ireland’s turn to host the Youths International Fly Fishing Competition between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland on Lough Owel in Mullingar, Co Westmeath on August 1st.
* Lough Melvin recorded its first salmon of the season on Sunday week last. Trolling along Garrison Shore, Niall Sweeney landed a fish of 3.5kg (7.75lb) on a 3-inch Black & Gold Devon Minnow and on Thursday, Gerry Timoney from Belcoo, Co Fer- managh, caught a fine trout of 5.2kg (11.5lb), also on the troll.
A further two salmon were recorded from the Drowes. Both fish weighed about 2.5kg, one fell to a Flying “C”, the other to spinner from the Mill Pool and Meadow beats, respectively.
* Near FM (90.3), the popular north-Dublin radio station, held an enjoyable evening in Howth Angling Centre recently to present an audio-visual display of Howth in keeping with the towns’ heritage, community and maritime tradition.
