'Rural Oscars' 2011 - Irish Winners Announced

Countryside Alliance Ireland's vision is of a vital, working and

thriving countryside for the benefit of the whole nation.

Ireland's rural Champions of 2011 have been revealed in the Coun- tryside Alliance Awards. The strong line up will now head to London in March to hear if they have scooped an overall UK & Ireland title.

The Countryside Alliance Awards, nicknamed the 'Rural Oscars', cele- brate the characters, skills, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the people who work so hard

to make it tick. The Awards are public-nomination led, meaning each business is put forward by a supportive customer. Judging of a shortlist of final- ists has now taken place and a winner declared in each category.

Lyall Plant, Chief Executive, commented,

"Countryside Alliance Ireland is very proud to be able to acknowledge and cele- brate some of Ireland's great characters and the wonderful produce that is gener- ated here."

"The winners of these Awards have been nominated by their local community and should therefore realise the recognition that their hard work is receiving. We hope each winner thoroughly enjoys the ceremony in London and continues to provide the valuable service to both rural and urban communities that they currently do. I would also like to thank all those who took part in the Awards and submitted nomi- nations, as these Awards would not be possible without them."

Clogher Valley Meats, Clogher, Co. Tyrone

This is a family run business offering a butcher and baker all in one. Kieran Meehan and his team produce sausages, pies, burgers and cured bacon in one part of the shop while bread, scones, cakes, buns and occasion cakes are baked in another. The staff has a strong knowledge of everything sold, especially the lo- cally reared meats for which Clogher Valley Meats is so famous. The shop also houses a deli section and Kieran plans to expand yet further to meet the needs of his community.

The Meehan family is central to Clogher, helping to organise the local Clogher Festival, raising funds for local charities and taking pride in longstanding support of local GAA, soccer, rugby and cricket teams. Kieran is on the local traders group within the town and is extremely motivated by local life, saying his motto is "My community needs me as much as I need my community".
