Carlow Coarse Angling Club 2012 – 2013
I met Gerry Mc Strew from the Carlow coarse angling club at the National Angling Show 2012 in Swords I asked him for a brief history of the club and here is what he had to say.
Carlow Coarse Angling Club was formed in 2006 by a group of coarse anglers led by
the now President Mr Dale Copeland and affiliated immediately with the governing body in Ireland the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland. Since its formation the Carlow cac have went on to be probably the most vocal and well publicised coarse angling club in the country due to their ex- cellent work and programmes on and along the river Barrow in Co. Carlow. In recent years the club have hosted the All Ireland Championships and several Leinster League competitions along with a host of other events on a yearly basis including the Waterways Ireland King of the Barrow festival.
As recent as last year the club, through the
Angling Council of Ireland trained eight officially recognised coaches to help with the running of events and spearhead a drive in Ireland to further the sport of coarse fishing. All eight coaches are very active in helping run events for junior anglers and events for people with disabilities. Programmes were ran last year for several groups over a period of six weeks these groups included Ladies groups from Carlow and Waterford, disabled groups from Wexford and Carlow and School groups in conjunction with the Waterford cac. Through a carefully laid out plan the chairman of the club Gerry Mcstraw along with the now Chairman of the N.C.F.F.I. Mr Der Casey have managed to secure part funding for ten double disabled friendly angling bays for Carlow Town and will host another eight week programme in conjunction with Rehab Carlow and the Irish Wheelchair Association based in Carlow Town.

Five senior members of the present committee completed a course on the Code of Ethics for Child Protection in Sport recently and two senior executive committee members went on to complete the Children’s Officer course ran by the Irish Sports Council. Three of the coaches and committee members also completed a First Aid course recently. The club were recog- nised for their work with the local community by the Carlow County Council recently at an awards ceremony in the County Council Chambers and received a bursary award towards running events this year. The club have secured places for a Water Safety course being rolled out this year by the Angling Council of Ireland and several more coaching programmes being ran by the Angling Council of Ireland. Last year saw a good turn out from the club at events such as the Junior Canals Cham-
pionship in Kilkock where several junior members were placed and Emma McStraw aged 7 placed second. There was also a very good turnout for the All Ireland Championships in Cavan with as many as ten anglers travelling to Cavan for the weekend and Carlow lady Monika won the Ladies title and brought the Trophy home to Carlow. The club are planning another trip to Killyshandra this year, and now have a seat on the Exec. Committee of the N.C.F.F.I . The club were probably one of the first clubs in the country to introduce Court appointed Wa- terkeepers who to this day remain vigilant and confiscate gear from illegal anglers on a regu- lar basis along the river Barrow. This was only a brief summary from the Carlow Coarse An- gling Club a full summary can be viewed through an E-Zine link on the Carlow cac Facebook page. Or alternatively by visiting
