INDIA TRADE SHOW TO FOCUS ON NEW PRODUCT INNOVATION

The recent eighth annual World Aquatic Health Conference (WAHC) drew 410 registrations from most states of the USA and various countries around the world – an increase of 30% compared with 2010, according to the organisers. Held in Seattle the event featured 45 seminars covering five

India, now acknowledged as the world’s fastest growing pool trade, is to focus its second annual trade show on product innovation. The 2nd WAVES Pool, Spa, Bath International Exhibition and Conference will be held from the 6 to 8 September 2012 at the new modern India Expo Centre of Greater Noida Delhi, India. It is India’s only event which brings together architects, builders, dealers, retailers, engineers, pool and spa companies, wellness professionals and private customers. On the heels of the successful first event the 2nd WAVES Expo is set to surpass the inaugural event and organisers say the demand for innovation and new products in the industry is so high it will be a special feature of the whole event. India is now one of the top three fastest growing economies in the world and as the country adapts to the change in working style, more Indians are seeking their own private retreats to relax from hectic lifestyles. According to the Construction Association & Councils of India, the country’s construction industry market size is growing at 23% a year. New developments of townships, second homes, hotels and resorts are flourishing across the country. The resulting surge in demand has come for private swimming pools, readymade hot tubs, exotic showers and saunas. It also is looking for infrastructure and after service and the sort of energy savings and water treatment products marketed throughout Europe.

NEW APP FOR US POOL PROFESSIONALS

A new Pool Service Manager app from the National Swimming Pool Foundation allows US service professionals with an iPhone or iPad to manage their business.

The application can schedule and record services, repairs, and chemical test results, calculate and

record water balance, chemical dosage, volume and flow rates, create and email shopping lists making supply pick ups more efficient, share work history and billing information with their main office, schedule recurring visits and many other functions.

NEGLECTED WATER SLIDES SCAR EUROPEAN SITES

are far more than I thought which have been abandoned and covered in rust.

Included is the Indoor Complex in Moscow which was left to become derelict after construction workers failed to complete it in time for the 1998 Youth Games, a site in Anzio in Italy, one acclaimed as the leading theme park in Europe and four Spanish coastal slides.

Derelict slides from the boom days of themed water rides, slides and water parks throughout Europe and the United States may well be over. A recent review of the state of the theme parks which were once teeming with holiday families enjoying themselves has left a trail of deserted, abandoned sites across Italy, Spain and even the United States.

Pierre Balson who carried out a review of the current state of water parks says there is a generation of 1980 and 1990 slides and parks which are dated and have never been upgraded.

“They have just been left to rot and scar the landscape. New slides with new technology have replaced some of the older sites but there

“It makes a sad collection and while one would have thought something could have been done they are all too far gone in terms of neglect. Many are like ghost towns. You certainly couldn’t run water through any of these structures now. There are successful themed parks still flourishing but these represent a certain time frame of about 20 years which has been lost forever.”

The graffiti-strewn rickety death traps lie neglected with dreary perspex slides.

CODES ARE BEST GREEN PRODUCTS

Two energy standard codes were voted joint best ‘green product’ at the US November international trade show in Las Vegas. The US trade association’s APSP Energy Efficiency of Self-Contained Portable Electric Spas and Hot Tubs and the Standard for Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Energy Efficiency were voted by industry professionals as outstanding energy enhancing products. More USstates are expected to adopt these energy standards soon.

FBI WARNING ON CHEMICALS

The FBI have been busy warning swimming pool retailers of the potential dangers some chemicals have in developing improvised explosives. The Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate says it needs to raise awareness of the use of certain chemicals — such as hydrogen peroxide, acetone and strong acids. The bureau has worked in conjunction with the pool and spa industry to give out

information about this threat. Despite these efforts, however, many retailers say they are unaware of the programme. So the FBI stepped up its campaign.
