118 EXPO

Philips Vari-Lite and TOA. D.A.S. Audio was the only taker of the outdoor demo space and certainly proved a draw to exhibitors and passers by alike. Chinese companies were obviously in attendance seeing Vietnam as an almost ex- tension of their domestic market, with the likes of Seer Audio sharing a stand with trussing manufacturers ICTC. Bill Lee’s SAE continued their almost uninterrupted exhibition run of 2011 and had the full range of amplifiers on show. Exhibitors from further afield and early adopters willing to take a punt at this market included Meyer Sound, Robe, Beyerdynamic and what could be said as: ‘The return of the Mit!’ Community who had a large presence, though with only two speakers on show, and Christine Howze keeping Thomas Mittelmann, and the rest of us all under control. Surprisingly, after two years establishing this event in Vietnam IIR / Informa have taken the decision to move the show to Bangkok, and shift the date to September - a month already horribly cluttered with shows. We’ll see what the take up is on that

show but it doesn’t seem to add anything to the exhibition calendar of 2012. Finally, and as an example of where Vietnam, and more appropriately Hanoi is, a visit to a club, New Square reviewed in mondo*dr 21.6, showed the sophistication of the installs going on with a major d&b audiotechnik sound system and sophis- ticated lighting and video wall backdrop. But also the control that is still kept over the country - photography was forbidden by the numerous security staff and the whole evening came to swift end at midnight, but not before there had been a go go dancing performance, not far removed from the Bunny Girl scene in Apocalypse Now (sorry to reference an obvious film) where all the girls were wearing stars and stripes bikinis. It would have had poor old Uncle Ho turning in his mausoleum! PALME Thailand takes place at the IMPACT Exhibition & Conference Centre in Bangkok on 19-21 September 2012.
