38-39 OUR STORY
The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902.
One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue.
The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity.

Time Running Out For Iran
To The Editor: Recently the United Na-
tions International Atomic Energy Agency, who thor- oughly investigated the Iranian nuclear develop- ment program, concluded Iran is developing nuclear weapons. The evidence, including satellite images, overwhelmingly points to the manufacture of nuclear weapons within the short term, probably on the order of a number of months to a year. U.S. intelligence information corroborates this assess- ment. The prospect of a nucle-
ar armed Iran, along with the capability to deliver the nuclear weapons via missile systems, poses a threat to the Middle East and Europe. Iran will be able to strike other Arab countries, Israel and parts of Europe. Other totalitarian coun-
tries with nuclear weap- ons, like North Korea, China, Russia, and Paki- stan, have respect for the capabilities of opposing forces armed with nucle- ar weapons. They know retaliation will be swift and comprehensive to a nuclear attack. Unfortunately, Iran

is governed by irratio- nal leaders who live in a closed society cut off from reality, and who believe in the use of military force to achieve their aims. Sanctions and diplo-
macy have not worked to deter belligerent Iran from developing nuclear weap- ons. The countdown to prevent Iran from possibly launching nuclear attacks is approaching action time by threatened powers in the Middle East.

Dichotomy Or Flim Flam?
To The Editor: President Obama con- stantly promotes ex- ports, exports, exports as a means to reduce our unfavorable balance of trade and hopefully, by extension, our increas- ing national debt year after year. However, he strangles business activ- ity with excessive new regulations, threats of new taxes, Obamacare and dictatorial executive actions. This posture results in diminishing exports, less business investment and fewer employees with no growth potential. He fos- ters economic stagnation with his policies, declin- ing middle class income, declining middle class wealth creation and the devaluation of the dollar which encourages price in- flation. He cannot scream for the plight of the middle class while inhibiting any possibility of middle class small business growth which is the direct result of his campaign against America. Remember in November, 2012.

Open Letter Response to Rep. Guinta
To the Editor: In a recent letter,Mr. Guinta, you said you ap- proved of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision, which opened the floodgates last year to mountains of cam- paign cash. When shad- owy corporate or political groups and individuals can use their multimil- lions to influence our elec- tions, it shuts out the rest of us, drowns our voices, See MAIL BOAT on 14

A Special Vet Dies On 11/11/11
To The Editor: It is entirely appropriate that my brother, Master
Chief Petty Officer Peter B. Handibode, U.S.N., should pass away on this Veteran’s Day. He had courageous- ly fought metastatic cancer for two years before los- ing the battle. Pete was supposed to die several days before but he tenaciously clung to life until the day that is so special to all veterans. He had dedicated three decades of his life in the
service of this great nation and its people. He rose quickly all the way up to E9, Master Chief Electri- cian’s Mate, passing difficult exams along the way to gain each promotion. The Navy chose to send Pete aboard a German destroyer in its PEP (petty officer exchange) program and in the exchange a German Master Chief was sent aboard an American vessel. After learning the German language for a year, Peter went aboard in Germany and served for three years. The German sailors loved him and when his tour was over, they “piped him over the side” and gave him the ship’s flag as a memento. Peter Handibode’s ship in the Navy was on full alert (DefCon3) for the entire Cuban Missile Crisis when we came so close to war with the Soviet Union. He remained at General Quarters (Battle Stations) for days on end. Fortunately the Soviets backed down and war was averted. I served with him on board a Navy ship homeported
out of Newport, R.I. Fresh out of Boot Camp, and concerned about getting seasick while underway, I asked Pete to teach me how to avoid that embar- rassment. He took me topside and showed me how to feel as one with the ship as it heaved and rolled. It worked. I got seasick only once in four years of sail- ing and that was off of Cape Hateras in a hurricane with forty foot seas. When I saw some “old salts” just as sick as me, I didn’t care. My brother always looked out for me, even saving
my life when I was just an eight year old kid. I love you, my brother, and I will miss you always.
