SURVIVING “IRENE” IN NEW YORK After fishing on Friday
by Pete Grasso Contributing Writer
After sitting out the wind
and rough water for 6-days, I was pretty anxious to get out and do some fishing. However, this down time afforded the opportunity to spend some quality time with my NY friends that I see only once a year. There is a “Campground” directly behind our rental cottage and over the years I have become very friendly with a good number of the campers. Bob and Caro- lyn, owners of the Salmon Country Marina, have also been friends for over 20 years. However, we came out to fish!
and Saturday morning, we became aware of the arrival of Hurricane Irene, which was due to hit there on Sunday. While picking up a bag of ice at the ma- rina, Bob announced that about 3:30 Sunday after- noon, he was opening up the big boat storage barn and throwing a “Hurricane Irene “ party and we were invited to join the fun. This was exciting. Sunday started out with
a good amount of rain and wind that didn’t reach hurricane force but it did blow! A ride out to the public boat launch clearly indicated that this was NOT a day to even think about venturing on the water.

PROFESSIONAL INTERIOR PAINTING In the interim, we were
expecting Johnny V & Tommie M to drive out from Laconia to spend the last week with us. The weather reports indi- cated that NH was going to be hit quite a bit harder than upstate NY and they opted to drive out on Mon- day……………..Whoa, was THAT a trip. Once they got to Brattle-
boro VT, they tried to take Rte 4 across to Troy, NY, which would save about 75 miles. However, after traveling about 10 miles, the road was closed as it had washed out. They headed back to I-91 south attempting to pick up Rte 90 in West Holyoke, MA. Wrong again! They finally called us a
bit later and informed us that they were tied up in Greenfield MA because I-91 was closed due to flooding. After walking
them through there, Dave is from Greenfield MA, they figured once they got on the NY thruway (Rte 90) it was a walk in the park for the rest of the trip. NOPE! Once they got to Amsterdam, NY, (about 20 miles west of Albany) the thruway was CLOSED, almost all the way to Syra- cuse, which was close to 100 miles. The Mo- hawk river had overflowed, flooding the thruway. De- tours, detours and more detours………
..They finally ended up at camp after 15 hours on the road. Back to the party! About
4:00 PM we arrived at the party and found about 50 – 60 folks from the camp- ground, etc there. What a GREAT time. There were 4 bushels of cherrystone clams, 2 – 3 bushels of FRESH sweet corn and a keg of beer. Everyone brought something to eat.
There were baked beans, more kinds of macaroni salads than I care to think about, venison sausage, etc. Three or four cakes, cupcakes, cookies and fudge.
Everyone had a wonder-
ful time and before it was all over, plans were be- ing made for August 28th 2012, a first anniversary of Hurricane Irene party. Don’t you know we’ll be there! I guess I don’t have to go
on that all of this weather really messed the lake up and by the time it all quieted down, I got back on the water only 3 more times before it was time to load the boat and head back to NH. In some respects (fish-
ing), this was the worst trip I had had in 24 years. However, in other respects, it was the BEST trip, as new friends were made and it was GREAT to re- new the old friendships. Compared to the trip
out, the trip home was much better, however, we did note a LOT of storm damage closer to Albany and up through southern Vermont. All in all, we’re all looking forward to next year.
Later……… Capt. Pete
