There were many secret


operations during World War II, including not only those conducted by gov- ernments as part of the war itself, but also those conducted by private sec- tor entities and organiza- tions looking to keep their assets out of harm’s way. One such secret opera-


tion took place right in the Lakes Region, where some of the world’s finest works of art, paintings by Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo,

Raphael, Botticelli, Ma- net, Degas, Whistler and Piero della Francesca, were stored away for safe keeping in a garage which was then part of the Dane Estate atop Center Harbor Hill on Rte. 25-B. Some 95 paintings and
